Getting Started

For those who are new to meditation, material is freely offered at our Wednesday night sangha meditation. Please ask for a ‘new meditator’ packet. You can also download a copy of this booklet here: Sangha intro to meditation.

Our library in the basement of the Madrona Center has a number of books on meditation practice and are available for borrowing. On occasion we offer an introduction to meditation class. If you would like to attend this introduction, or would like more information, contact us about your interest. We hold this class only when requested, so be sure to call or email before coming.

If you prefer an online course, the Insight Meditation Center offers a 6-week online course that includes telephone or Skype consultations with a teacher. This course is based on a 6-week Introduction to Meditation course offered by Gil Fronsdal.  You can download or listen to the talks online.  You can also read transcripts of the talks.

Rodney Smith, guiding teacher of the Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS), has a 6 week series of introductory talks online.  SIMS also offers introductory classes in the Seattle area.

Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein have created an Insight Meditation Kit, published by Sounds True, that contains two CDs and a workbook.  The CD is available in the Port Townsend Sangha’s lending library.

Dharma Seed and Audio Dharma are two online resources for talks by a wide range of Vipassana teachers.
